Congratulations to our Cockburn Volunteer Award winners! Angela Sawiak from the Wetlands Centre won Volunteer of the Year for her important workmotivating teams to collaborate to revegetate and restore natural ecosystems, like mapping and reporting land case processes, and propagating and planting seedlings at Beeliar Regional Park.
The Cockburn Volunteer Organisation of the Year award was presented to Marine Rescue Cockburn, recognising its highly skilled volunteers who dedicate their time — often in dangerous conditions — to perform a crucial role in our community rescuing those in trouble at sea.
Serene Anderson from Friends of the Community (FoC) won the Mayor’s Volunteer Award. Serene has been active in the Cockburn community for more than 15 years and co-founded FoC, which specialises in providing healthy low-cost food at special events and returning 100 per cent of the profits back to the community.
The City’s collaborative consultation for its Aboriginal Cultural and Visitors Centre has received the Judge’s Encouragement Award at the 2022 International Association for Public Participation Australasia (IAP2) Core Value Awards in Melbourne. The City designed a bespoke consultation in collaboration with the Cockburn Aboriginal Reference Group and local Beeliar Boodjar Elders during finalisation of the proposed centre’s design and location. The judges' commented that it was great to see an example of First Nations people providing input to the development of a building that would showcase their culture to the entire community — an example of starting out with a set idea and adapting/changing based on engagement. While the project has experienced delays due to current market conditions, construction on the western side of Walliabup-Bibra Lake is due to commence in early 2023 with completion due in mid-2024.
Help us to help you by reporting illegal dumping
Illegal dumping is just that — illegal! It’s an eyesore, attracts vermin, and can negatively impact the environment as well as local property prices. With fines of up to $62,500 for individuals and $125,000 for businesses, plus the damage to reputation as offenders’ details are made public, it’s time to stop illegal dumping. Please help us by reporting illegal dumping. Call the Pollution Watch Hotline on1300 784 782 (24 hours) or emailpollutionwatch@dwer.wa.gov.au.
We have around 200 playgrounds in Cockburn and every year some of these reach the end of their useful lives. We then replace them with new, similar type equipment, like we've done at Peregrine Park, Beeliar (pictured above). To ensure we meet the local community's needs, we produce three designs for each playground and ask residents which one they prefer. The design with the most votes is installed. Are any of the 14 playgrounds being renewed in 2022-23 in your suburb?
With the hot weather just around the corner, now is the time to start putting measures in place to help protect your property and keep your family and pets safe.
