CEO rotation team now in effect in Cockburn first
Executive Corporate Affairs Victoria Green and Executive Governance and Strategy Emma Milne are the first women in the City’s history to be appointed to head up a CEO role at Cockburn in either a permanent or acting role.
Ms Green and Ms Milne will take on the Acting CEO role, along with the City’s Chief of Operations Anton Lees, on a recurring two-monthly rotational basis during the six to 12-month recruitment program for a new CEO.
You may have seen some quirky characters appearing up on the City of Cockburn’s social media feeds in recent weeks. These are the members of Cockburn’s GREAT Gang – the subjects of a new waste education campaign with a twist.
Local comedian, Adrian Alaberg, was commissioned to write and star in the campaign, in the hopes that his trademark brand of cheeky humour would help to engage residents with a message of sustainability.
The series features six videos, with five of these focusing on individual characters based on the State Waste Authority’s GREAT acronym for reducing waste – Giving, Recycling, Earthcycling, Avoiding waste and Taking hazardous waste to drop off points.
Each video provides helpful tips for how to reduce personal waste with some laughs sprinkled in for good measure.
The series was filmed, edited and directed by SoCo Studios, and was primarily funded by a Waste Sorted Community Education Grant from the WA Waste Authority.
Do you own a dog or cat and have moved house recently?
If so, please let our rangers know by Tuesday 27 September so we can send out your pet re-registration form in advance of the due date, Monday 31 October. By law, all dogs over three-months-old and cats over six-months-old must be registered with the City of Cockburn and microchipped. Cats must also be sterilized.
Registering and microchipping your dog and cat gives our rangers a better chance of re-uniting them with you if they're lost. Knowing dog and cat numbers also allows the City to provide the right type and level of services and facilities for your pet.

Our CoSafe officers will monitor your property to ensure it's safe and secure while you're gone. If there are any concerns, your emergency contact person will be contacted, or the police if required.
As of Thursday 1 September there is now a new Australian Fire Danger Rating System (AFDRS) in place, which is part of a national project to ensure fire danger ratings are communicated in the same way across Australia.
Fire danger ratings tell us how dangerous a bushfire could be, based on factors like the weather and the types of vegetation in the area, and also what to do.
The new AFDRS is simpler and more action-driven, so you know exactly what you should do to help protect yourself and others from bushfire. The new AFDRS levels include:
MODERATE – plan and prepare.
HIGH – be ready to act.
EXTREME – take action now to protect your life and property.
CATASTROPHIC – for your survival, leave bushfire risk areas.

Perhaps you know a volunteer, neighbour or workmate who lives or works in Cockburn to make our community the best place to be? Nominate them by Monday, 31 October for the 2023 Citizen of the Year Awards! As well as the main Citizen of the Year award, there are categories for youth, seniors, and for groups or events.
If your nominee is successful, you’ll even get a special thank you gift for your efforts. Awards will be presented at the City’s Citizenship Ceremony on Thursday 26 January, 2023.
It’s events season and we're gearing up to bring you a whole range of fun and family-friendly events. Keep your eyes peeled for the latest event guide in your mailbox from Monday 19 September. Copies can also be found in our libraries and at the City's Administration Building.
We are kicking off the season with the Cockburn Fur Run on Sunday 16 October at Manning Park from 10am-1pm. Bring your beloved pooch for a morning of fun with free activities such as the pooch parade, agility course, vet checks, pet behavioural advice, or why not treat your furry friend to a discounted dog wash!
Crushing facility for Bibra Lake not going ahead
Council voted to refuse the development citing concerns about the management of asbestos, dust and noise at the facility’s proposed location within 500 metres of residential houses. The company involved appealed the City’s decision to the State Administrative Tribunal, and then recently withdrew their appeal following their acceptance of an offer to purchase the site by a third party.
The Cockburn Volunteer Resource Centre will host a series of pop-up info hubs in Coolbellup and Success Libraries and a free Step into Volunteering workshop at Spearwood Library, making it easier for you to find out more about volunteering. With more than 80 positions available locally, we’ll be able to match you to the perfect role!
