Sustainability achievements in Cockburn Sustainability is a top priority for the City. Here are some of the successes we had in the 2020-21 financial year:
Protect yourself from Ross River Virus
With all the rainfall we’ve had this Winter, we can expect mosquitoes out in force as the weather gets warmer. Some mosquitoes carry disease-causing viruses, including Ross River Virus. The City monitors the mosquito population closely and works with the Department of Health to control outbreaks. Mosquitoes lay their larvae in still or stagnant water, so they are attracted to lakes and wetlands. What can I do to protect myself from mosquito bites? While the City treats sumps, soak wells, road drains, and other man-made water bodies to prevent breeding, there are things you can do to protect yourself:
Cover up with long, loose-fitting clothingUse a repellent containing DEET (diethyltoluamide) or picaridinEmpty, remove or cover water-holding containersInstall insect screens on windows and doorsUse mosquito nets and mosquito-proof tents when campingChlorinate your pool and make sure the filtration system is active.

Young Aubin Grove residents have their say Radiata Park is set to receive a mini facelift thanks to the input of young Aubin Grove residents. Over 100 school students and local residents were invited to have a say on how Radiata Park could better meet their own and their local community’s needs. A draft design, which was published for final public comment in July, included among other things a plaza style skate feature, ‘Ninja Warrior’ style obstacle course and 3 on 3 basketball court. Long term planning identified a priority to improve how some public open spaces cater to this demographic.
A long history of quarantine in Cockburn Did you know at the end of WWI, troops brought back the deadly Spanish influenza. In 1918, troops on HMAT Boonah picked up the Spanish flu refuelling in South Africa. By the time they reached Fremantle, there were almost 300 sick men on board who were taken to Woodman Point to quarantine. With so many patients, local and army doctors and nurses were brought in to care for them, many becoming ill themselves. In total, 31 people died. In 1893 there was a similar scenario when a crew member from the SS Saladin began to show signs of smallpox three weeks after jumping ship in Fremantle. Along with many other patients, he was sent to Woodman Point to quarantine.
Where do I put soft plastics? Soft plastics cannot go in your recycling bin. This includes plastic bags, plastic food wrap, food packaging such as pasta, rice and cereal bags, and bubble wrap – any plastic that is ‘scrunchable’. These types of plastics get caught in the recycling conveyer belt, which can cause the entire system to shut down. Soft plastics can be easily recycled at REDcycle collection bins found at many supermarkets. They are transformed into a unique range of recycled-plastic products including furniture, bollards and signage.
What are the chances of finding your lost pet? If your dog or cat is lost and is registered and microchipped, our Rangers have a very good chance of finding and returning your pet.
As required by law, all dogs over three months old, and cats over six months old must be registered and microchipped. Knowing how many dogs and cats there are and where they are located also allows us to provide the right type and number of services and facilities. Register your dog or cat before the 1 November deadline.
Thanks for sharing your views on bulk waste verge collections In July and August we asked our community for their views on how we do bulk waste verge collections. Thank you to the 1,000 plus Cockburn residents who participated. You told us what was important to you in a service and what you think about the current system and alternative ways of collecting bulk waste. We are now reviewing your input. Your feedback will help us understand what we can do to ensure we are delivering a cost-effective bulk waste verge collection service that meets our community’s needs and waste reduction targets for a sustainable future.
The train will be down, so why not ride to work? With parts of the Mandurah train line down from 26 December for a minimum of 20 days, you may have to look at alternative ways of getting into the CBD and surrounding areas. There's no better time to start building your fitness by getting on your bike and riding along the Kwinana Fwy shared path to the CBD. It will get you fit and will probably end up quicker and easier than taking the replacement buses. If you start now, you should be fit enough by late December when the closure begins. By February, riding to work will probably have become an enjoyable habit! Please note it is the section between Aubin Grove to Elizabeth Quay stations that will close for a minimum of 20 days.
