Who is Quintessentially Cockburn?
His name is synonymous with Perth’s southern suburbs, on the back of numerous community pop-up forest projects, and certainly following the completion of his high-profile sustainable eco-home at Baker Square in Hamilton Hill.
But author and sustainability university lecturer Chris Ferreira’s influence extends far wider. All the way overseas for readers of tree-change non-fiction, but also to the like-minds of the growing population of those concerned about their carbon footprint on our forever planet.
Chris wants to help us all do better to ensure we keep planet earth in good stead as our forever home, hence the name of his multi award-winning sustainability passion project — The Forever Project.
It’s helped elevate his name to a household one in these parts at the very least, making Chris undoubtedly Quintessentially Cockburn.
A diverse range of native fauna, including six species of micro-bat, was detected during zoological surveys at Bibra Lake and Yaakan Park, confirming the conservation reserves’ largely intact habitats are teeming with wildlife.
The survey also confirmed a diverse array of reptiles including four species of conservation-significant skink, plus key species such as Carnaby’s and Forest Red-tailed Black Cockatoo, a range of conservation-significant and migratory waterbird, and the locally significant Quacking Frog, Quenda and Brush-tailed Possum.
City of Cockburn Acting Head of Sustainability and Environment Rory Garven said the survey results were good news, confirming management efforts by the City and the community were paying off.
The City of Cockburn has a long history of working towards reconciliation with our First Nations community and our goal is to strengthen Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal connections, through education and learning.
This year's theme is 'For Our Elders'. Across every generation, First Nations Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place of respect in communities, families, and culture.

The Fremantle Football Club is proud to partner with the Purple Hands Foundation and SEDA Group to offer a one-year Dual Diploma program in sport and business.
The program is designed to give 16–20-year-olds the opportunity to study in a hands-on learning environment and gain real experience in the sports industry alongside the Fremantle Dockers.

The State Administrative Tribunal has instructed the City of Cockburn to publish the following apology from Ms Lee-Anne Smith, former Councillor of the City of Cockburn, to Mr Stephen Cain:
The State Administrative Tribunal has found that Ms Lee-Anne Smith, former Councillor City of Cockburn, breached:
Regulation 7(1)(b) of the Local Government (Rules of Conduct) Regulations 2007 (WA) when she made a misleading and derogatory Facebook Post on 7 November 2019 in breach of the City’s Code of Conduct and deserving of a penalty, which was be intended to cause detriment to Mr Stephen Cain; and
Regulation 11 of the Local Government (Rules of Conduct) Regulations 2007 (WA) on three occasions when she failed to make an impartiality declaration at the City of Cockburn’s Special Council Meetings held on 4 November 2019, 4 December 2019, and 13 January 2020.
The Tribunal censures Ms Smith for the breach of regulation 7(1)(b) and the three breaches of regulation 11 of the Local Government (Rules of Conduct) Regulations 2007 (WA).
Public apology by former Councillor Lee-Anne Smith
A complaint was made to the Local Government Standards Panel, in which it was alleged that I contravened:Â
Regulation 7(1)(b) of the Local Government (Rules of Conduct) Regulations 2007 when I made a Facebook post on 7 November 2019 on my Facebook page that was derogatory, sarcastic, and intended to cause detriment to Mr Stephen Cain, who was the CEO of the City of Cockburn at the time; and
Regulation 11 of the Local Government (Rules of Conduct) Regulations 2007 on three occasions when I failed to make an interest declaration at the City of Cockburn’s Special Council Meetings held on 4 November 2019, 4 December 2019 and 13 January 2020.
The Panel found that I thereby breached regulation 7(1)(b) and 11 of the said Regulations.
In its decision of CC 167/2022 the State Administrative Tribunal upheld this finding and ordered that a public apology be made.
I accept that I should not have made the derogatory and offensive comments.
I now apologise to Mr Stephen Cain, the Council and the public for my conduct.
