Repair Cafe Cockburn celebrates 5th birthday

The Repair Cafe organise monthly repair sessions, where visitors bring broken items from home and repair them with the help of a volunteer. Items to repair can include clothing, bikes, furniture and other household items. Since opening in 2019, the group has seen close to 900 items come through the doors, and nearly 800 of these have been successfully repaired!

Repair Cafe is run entirely by volunteers, who are a fantastic group of people always showing up with enthusiasm and a willingness to get in and help out wherever and with whatever needs doing.

If you have any repairs that need to be done or would like to see how it works, feel free to pop in at the South Lake Ottey Family and Neighbourhood Centre, 2A South Lake Drive, South Lake on the second Sunday of the month (10am-midday), or find them on Facebook: Repair Café Cockburn.

In this fast-paced, interactive session, you'll uncover the seven key practices crucial for attracting and retaining volunteers in today’s world.

This session is designed for organisations ready to embrace these changes, enhance their volunteer engagement strategies, and continue leading with strength. Equip your team with the tools to ensure lasting success in an ever-changing environment.

Evening Session: Engaging Your Community to Volunteer
Monday 7 October 2024: 6-9pm

Learn how to attract and engage people from your community to volunteer for your cause or organisation. Martin will guide you through actionable insights designed to strengthen your volunteerism efforts, no matter your cause, the size of your organisation, or the resources available.

This session will leave you with clear goals and strategies to effectively reach your community and encourage them to volunteer.

Workshops are held at the City of Cockburn Administration Building, 9 Coleville Crescent, Spearwood. Participants are welcome to attend one or both workshops, however registration is essential.

The City of Cockburn invites you to share your opinion and suggestions about your neighbourhood. We want to know what makes a neighbourhood great and how liveable your neighbourhood is. Your opinion is important as it can help make your neighbourhood a better place to live, work and play. The City will use these results to guide future decisions in your area.

Introducing the Volunteer Resource Centre team, Kristine and Chloe. Based at the Cockburn Volunteer Resource Centre, we're here to help with all your volunteering needs and questions. We'll also be holding a stall at the Cockburn Rotary Spring Fair on Sunday 27 October, so pop by for a chat or have a spin of the wheel to win a prize!

This month, the National Strategy for Volunteering’s first three-year Action Plan was launched. Action Plan 2024-2027 includes 22 coordinated actions and lots of opportunities for stakeholders to participate.

Visit us at one of our Cockburn libraries with any questions you may have about volunteering: Wednesday 2 October at Success Library or 6 November at Coolbellup Library from 10am-midday. Otherwise, our office in the Cockburn Seniors Centre is open for appointment.

The City’s Grants Coordinator, Kim, will be available at Cockburn Libraries to help, on Tuesday 17 September at Spearwood Library from 10am-1pm and Thursday 19 September at Coolbelup Library from 1-4pm. Pop in or make a booking.

Sometimes people think they're not taking part in volunteering, but actually often people don't realise that they are!

If you're taking part in some form of voluntary unpaid work, this makes you a volunteer. Maybe you've helped on a stall at your children's school, maybe you're on a Reference group or the score keeper at your local sporting club. These are all forms of volunteering!
