G-7 leaders, meeting in Germany to discuss further sanctions on Moscow, released a statement saying, “Indiscriminate attacks on innocent civilians constitute a war crime.” The U.N. | | Trigger Malfunction | Judges Block Statewide Abortion Bans in Louisiana, Utah The battleground shifted to state courts Monday after the Supreme Court overturned the judgment that had guaranteed the constitutional right to abortion since 1973. District judges in Louisiana and Utah issued temporary restraining orders on those states implementing their anti-abortion trigger laws. Clinics in Idaho, Kentucky, Mississippi and Texas filed suits seeking similar relief. One of Louisiana’s three abortion clinics confirmed it would resume performing procedures this morning. “We’re going to do what we can,” said Kathaleen Pittman of Shreveport’s Hope Medical Group for Women. “It could all come to a screeching halt.” Anti-abortion activists have engaged lawyers to ensure it does. | | Toxic Leak | Poisonous Gas Tank Explosion Kills at Least 13 in Jordanian PortA video posted to Twitter showed a tank crashing onto the deck of a ship after falling from a winch. Plumes of bright yellow gas rose into the air as people fled the scene. The gas has been identified as chlorine, a chemical frequently used in cleaning products. When inhaled it reacts with water in the body to produce dangerous acids, typically causing fluid to build up in the lungs. By Monday night 123 of the 259 injured were still receiving treatment in local hospitals. Thanks to windless conditions the nearby beach town of Aqaba was cleared of danger. (Source: BBC) |

| INTRIGUING | | | Orange Toads Can’t Jump | Brazil’s Pumpkin Toadlets Can’t Stick a LandingFrogs are renowned for their jumping prowess, but these Brazilian toadlets the size of an M&M lose their balance in midair and are more likely to land on their backs or bellies than their feet. A recent study has pinpointed their tiny ear canals as the problem: “Even though the canals are as big as they can possibly be relative to their heads, they’re still not big enough for the liquid to move at a rate that would allow them to maintain balance,” said co-author Edward Stanley. Luckily they’ve found other ways to get ahead, like camouflage and subterfuge. (Source: Mongabay, Image: Richard Essner / Southern Illinois University Edwardsville) |

| | Mr. Happy Face | Chihuahua Mix With a Mohawk Wins World’s Ugliest Dog Contest Before their meeting at an Arizona dog shelter last year, staff warned Jeneda Banelly that Mr. Happy Face “could be inbred because he was so ugly.” They also said the 17-year-old pooch’s multiple tumors meant he might only have weeks or months left. But “when I first met him, he was the happiest creature that I had ever met,” said Banelly. “He hobbled up to me and chose me.” Now, 10 months later, he’s been crowned World’s Ugliest Dog at a California contest that promotes animal adoption. “It was clear and obvious Mr. Happy Face deserved to be champion,” said judge Debra Mathy. | | Trash or Treasure? | Reclusive Artist’s Portfolio Saved From Dumpster, Exhibition Planned Alan Warburton was distraught when his “shy neighbor” George Westren died alone in his London apartment during lockdown. So when he heard Westren’s flat was being cleared last week, he rushed to investigate. To his horror, he saw hundreds of Westren’s artworks being bundled into bags. While he couldn’t save it all, he “saw George’s portfolio lying in the [dumpster] and managed to get that.” Being an artist, Warburton instantly recognized the quality of Westren’s geometric op art, and he’s now selling prints in the hopes of putting on a posthumous exhibition for a man he wishes he’d gotten to know better. | | Help From Above | Turkish Firm Donates Drones to Ukraine After Crowdfunding SuccessThe Bayraktar TB2’s destruction of Russian artillery systems and armored vehicles is so legendary that it’s become the subject of a crude Ukrainian song that mocks Russian troops with the chorus “Bayraktar, Bayraktar. ” Now, after a crowdfunding campaign in Turkey raised enough money to buy several TB2s, Baykar — the manufacturer of the unmanned aerial vehicle with a 40-foot wingspan — is donating three drones and asked that the “funds be remitted instead to the struggling people of Ukraine.” Turkey’s come under pressure from sometime ally Russia not to help Ukraine’s war effort — but Baykar is privately owned. | | Pray Tell | SCOTUS Upholds Coach’s Right to Pray on 50-Yard Line Precedent? What precedent? The Supreme Court ruled Monday that high school football coach Joseph Kennedy had a constitutional right to pray on the field after games. The vote was split along familiar lines, 6-3. In his majority judgment Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote that “respect for religious expressions is indispensable to life in a free and diverse republic.” Justice Sonia Sotomayor, dissenting, accused her colleagues of setting America “down a perilous path in forcing states to entangle themselves with religion, with all of our rights hanging in the balance.” Last week the court ruled religious schools couldn’t be excluded from a tuition program.
