On this day in 1957, reports of two men badly burnt in an explosion made the front page. The pair were refrigerator mechanics from Sydney working in the cellar of the Hotel Ainslie-Rex when the explosion hit. One of the men was believed to have been using a safety lamp which changes colour if the presence of gas is detected. The flame from the lamp was believed to have been the cause of the explosion which was powerful enough to throw both men to the floor. Both were badly burnt on the face and hands. READ MORE
