🇺🇸 The veterans health chief is set for two days of Maine visits. ◉ Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough will be here on Thursday and Friday for visits to federal health centers alongside members of Maine's congressional delegation. ◉ McDonough will begin in Rumford alongside Sen. Angus King, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, and Rep. Jared Golden, a Democrat from Maine's 2nd District. The visit will focus on the PACT Act, a bill passed last year that expands health coverage for veterans exposed to toxic chemicals. ◉ He will tour the Togus headquarters of the state's VA system on Friday before a Portland panel on veterans issues alongside King and Rep. Chellie Pingree, a Democrat from Maine's 1st District. ◉ McDonough was a White House chief of staff under former President Barack Obama and now heads an agency with great importance to Maine, which has a large share of veterans. In May, the delegation wrote a letter to him urging higher reimbursement rates to providers treating veterans for mental health conditions. Correction: Yesterday's newsletter misstated how quickly an Office of New Americans would be set up within Gov. Janet Mills' administration. The governor issued an executive order asking her policy office for a plan for the new agency by January 2024. It would be created after that. |
