Colorado mass shooting kills 10 people, including an officer

An afternoon shooting at a crowded Colorado supermarket killed 10 people, including the first police officer to arrive.

One suspect was in custody, authorities said late Monday, although they didn't identify the suspect nor a motive for the shooting. The slain officer was identified as Eric Talley, 51, who had been with Boulder police for over 10 years. The attack was the seventh mass killing this year in the U.S., following the March 16 shooting that left eight people dead in the Atlanta area.

Today could be the final day of jury selection in the Derek Chauvin trial.

The presiding judge indicated that he intends to seat one more person for the jury of 15 total, which includes three alternates. The court is bringing 12 potential jurors today as the jury selection process continues with less than a week left until the opening statements. The newest juror, chosen Monday, is a white social worker who’s in her 20s. So far, the jury includes six people of color -- a group that is more racially diverse than Hennepin County as a whole.

First time in nearly a year, Minnesota reported no new COVID-19 deaths yesterday.

Monday's COVID-19 data marks the first time since mid-April last year that Minnesota didn't report any daily deaths on a nonholiday update. Even as deaths fall, however, case counts and positivity rates have been rising steadily. The testing positivity rate has risen from just 2.7 percent two weeks ago to over 4 percent over the last week.

After a promising report on vaccine efficacy, a federal agency suggests AstraZeneca might have used old data.

In an unusual post-midnight statement, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said the Data Safety and Monitoring Board, which monitors the trial, is concerned "outdated information" which could lead to an "incomplete view of the efficacy data." Those results showed the vaccine was 79 percent effective at preventing COVID symptoms and 100 percent at preventing severe illness and hospitalization.
