Compassion Is a Muscle

You know that feeling after you’ve tried a new workout? You wake up the next morning and begin to get out of bed, then all of a sudden soreness hits in muscles that you weren’t even aware of before that moment.

It hurts.

The same goes for our disposition toward our neighbors both near and far. In “A Simple Way to Become a More Compassionate Person,” John Frame shares an excerpt from his new action guide, 7 Days to Upping Your Prayer Life, Loving Others, and Having More Joy.

“Step by step, caring and acts of compassion can increase,” writes Frame. “These begin with first putting your feelings into action. Small acts of compassion go a long way in helping and encouraging people in ways we’ll never know. They also help us. Sharing kindness can make us happier people.”

Like that first lift of a dumbbell or attempt at a yoga pose, our initial acts of compassion may be a bit clumsy and leave us feeling some discomfort. But as we try again, and again, and again, we’ll find our compassion building. Sure, it may hurt at first. But it will also feel like getting stronger.
