Happy retirement! We named a 40-million-year-old shark after you.

After 26 years managing the vertebrate collections for the LSU Museum of Natural Science, Suyin Ting is retiring. To celebrate, some researchers who worked with Ting named a prehistoric species of shark after her: Carcharhinus tingae.

Holes in the domestic violence safety net

As Louisiana reached the second-highest rate of female homicides in the country, legislative audits set out to look at what systems our state has in place to help survivors. What they found isn't good: Many victims can't find shelters where they can escape, and some laws meant to protect them are being unevenly enforced.

Homeless veterans highlight a bigger problem

Sidney Woods runs a nonprofit in Hammond for homeless veterans. He's a veteran himself, so he knows some of what they're going through.

His nonprofit is one of several that is well over capacity as people pour in from rural areas, particularly those that were smashed by Hurricane Ida. This story looks at the scope of the problem.
