House Republicans are trying to gut the Corporation for Public Broadcasting — and the Senate is pushing a terrible bill that would make it even harder for independent news outlets to survive. At a time when an average of two local newspapers are shutting down every single week, this is bad news.1
The Journalism Competition and Preservation Act would reward the same media conglomerates and hedge funds that have destroyed local news. We don’t need another bill that makes it easier for those with influence to get even more influence.

Instead of rushing this bad bill through Congress, our elected officials should increase funding for public media to help put reporters back on local beats and expand coverage in communities that companies like Sinclair have neglected.
