| With a deadline approaching, congressional leaders released Wednesday evening a $1.3 trillion compromise spending bill to fund the government through Sept. 30. The measure would increase funding to fight the opioid epidemic, help states with election security, and boost infrastructure spending across the country, including for a tunnel between New York and New Jersey that President Trump opposes. The deal would also include only limited funding for security on the southern border and no new money to hire agents to carry out deportations â rejecting two items that Trump had demanded. The legislation must pass the House, the Senate, and be signed by Trump before Friday at midnight to avoid another partial government shutdown.
