The demand for mortgages is growing, spurred by sales of new homes, despite a rise in mortgage rates. The total mortgage application volume increased by 3% compared to the previous week, with applications for a mortgage to purchase a home also rising by 3%, although they were 21% lower year over year.

Researchers at the University of Maryland have found a way to take a picture of someone in a room, zoom in on the reflections from that person's cornea, flip the point of view and remove human distortions to create 3D images of items in that room. If researchers could find a way to incorporate this capability into existing virtual- or augmented-reality programs, it could revolutionize many industries, including construction, real estate and manufacturing.

Clark County, Nev., has announced a $70 million initiative to address the shortage of affordable housing, with $50 million allocated to fund rental housing this year and $20 million planned for supportive housing developments.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has imposed a $25 million fine on ACI Worldwide, which the CFPB says processed $2 billion worth of mortgage payment transactions through its Mr. Cooper subsidiary without the consent of nearly a half-million customers. The CFPB says the transactions took place in 2021 and resulted in overdraft and insufficient fund fees in many cases, although the accounts that were affected have since been rectified.

The Consumer Confidence Index increased more than 7 points during June, marking the highest level since January of last year, according to The Conference Board. Fewer consumers believe a recession is likely compared to May, and around 30% expect their household finances to improve in the next six months.
