COP29: Business expectations on climate finance, carbon markets and resilience

The 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) is taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, with BusinessEurope participating in the discussions. Our event "Operationalising Article 6 of the Paris Agreement: State of Play and Business Perspectives", is scheduled for 16 November.
European businesses play a crucial role in the journey to climate neutrality. As an official observer of the UNFCCC process, BusinessEurope urges COP29 participants to advance on several key topics. First, we call for an ambitious climate finance target beyond $100 billion that can mobilise private capital, which is essential to accelerate innovation and the transition to a low-carbon economy. We also call for flexibility in operationalising Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, to enable businesses to participate effectively in carbon markets while maintaining environmental integrity.
Another critical issue is paving the way for ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) from Parties to align with the Paris Agreement and raise global climate ambition. Finally, we advocate for accelerating adaptation efforts to stimulate investments in resilience, avoiding unnecessary bureaucracy. Strong cooperation among businesses, authorities, and communities is key to building resilience. Read our full position paper here. More information on the event we are hosting can be found here.
