Jurors shown footage from perspective of officers as Floyd is pinned to ground

On Wednesday, jurors in the murder trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin viewed intense police body camera footage capturing multiple angles of the incident that led to George Floyd’s killing last May.

The videos offered a brutal, up-close look at officers struggling to push a handcuffed Floyd into the squad car, then pinning him to the pavement to subdue him as he cried out that he couldn’t breathe, while bystanders on the curb yelled that he was dying. An eyewitness, Charles McMillian, 61, broke down after recounting on the stand what happened that day.

3 things to know:

  • Jurors watch extended police body cam video of fatal encounter

  • Case expected to hinge on who or what is responsible for Floyd’s death

  • Store clerk testifies he’s haunted by decision to call police, after Floyd used a phony $20

How people are supporting each other during the trial

The Derek Chauvin trial and the amount of news coverage it’s receiving is taking a toll on people, especially people of color. That’s why we’re working with community partners to create a space centered in healing, empathy and solutions. Host Angela Davis was joined by local guests to talk about how community members can support each other during this challenging time.

Leading by example, Minnesota imams televise COVID-19 vaccinations

Sixteen imams from around Minnesota gathered to get their COVID-19 vaccines in front of BBC Somali and Universal Somali TV cameras, hoping it would encourage community members hesitant to be vaccinated.

The pandemic has hit Minnesota’s Somali population hard, and in recent years, the community’s vaccination uptake has fallen off. Between 2004 and 2014, vaccination rates against measles, mumps and rubella dropped from 92 percent to 42 percent in Minnesota Somali children, according to a 2017 report from the British Medical Journal.

“We are the ones who give an example to follow,” said Imam Hassan Ali Mohamud, an organizer of the event who presides over Islamic Da’Wah Center, a mosque in St. Paul.

Here are Minnesota’s latest COVID-19 statistics

  • 6,836 deaths (12 new)

  • 517,881 positive cases; 96 percent off isolation

  • 29.8 percent of Minnesotans with at least one vaccine dose

  • 81.3 percent of Minnesotans 65 and older with at least one vaccine dose
