There was some better news for the self-employed this evening as the government announced they will be able to claim a grant of up to £2,500 a month to help them cope with the financial impact of the crisis.


The announcement came at the end of another day of fast-moving developments as the virus continues to spread across the world.

  • Chancellor Rishi Sunak this evening announced that self-employed people facing financial difficulties will be able to have 80 per cent of their wages covered by the government - capped at £2,500 a month. The support will last for an initial period of three months. Mr Sunak said this would be extended if necessary. 
  • The UK government has ordered 10,000 ventilators from Dyson. The firm has invented a new type of ventilator in response to a call on behalf of the NHS. The devices will first have to pass stringent medical tests. The NHS currently has around 8,000 ventilators
