Today is Wednesday. Temperatures will be in the 70s throughout the state with rain that could be heavy at times. Here's what we're talking about in Maine today.

Here's the latest on the coronavirus in Maine
  • The federal government is telling international students that they need to leave the country or transfer if their college or university doesn’t plan to reopen for in-person instruction this fall, but
the impact should be limited in Maine
as long as the colleges that have announced their plans to reopen campus don’t change course.

  • For Maine, California could offer a cautionary tale, even though it’s larger and more populated, according to Dr. Robert Horsburgh Jr., a professor of epidemiology at Boston University. While California seemed to be bringing the virus under control last spring, it is now contending with its own large spike in cases after reopening portions of its economy.

  • They have been closed for months because of the pandemic, but this week Maine’s two casinos will be allowed to reopen after state officials agreed to a pandemic safety plan that will limit capacity to 200 people.

  • There’s going to be a ripple effect through the Maine economy as colleges decide whether to reopen this fall. A report issued in June by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston found that Maine leads the region in terms of the number of municipalities that are heavily dependent on colleges and universities for their local economies.
Election results not expected to be delayed in Maine despite virus changes

  • There will likely be fewer Maine voters at the polls on Tuesday compared to a typical primary election as the coronavirus prompts a record sum of absentee ballots, but results are not expected to be delayed unless ranked-choice voting kicks in for high-profile races.
Internet service providers dealt major blow in federal court ruling on privacy law
  • Maine's pioneering, strict internet privacy law is not preempted by federal law, a judge ruled on Tuesday in a scathing rebuke to an argument from internet service providers. The case will continue in court, but Judge Lance Walker's move to throw that argument out is likely to destabilize efforts to overthrow a law that went into effect last week.
This fruit tastes like a cross between a blueberry and raspberry, and a Maine farm is turning it into syrup and beer

  • A St. John Valley farming family who planted thousands of haskap berry plants five years ago were convinced that a wide open market for the fruit was an opportunity for northern Maine farmers. It turns out they were right.
Have $1.25M? You can bid on the secure building where the Navy oversees BIW.
  • A secure, 39,000-square-foot building that the Navy uses to watch over shipbuilding at Bath Iron Works is going up for online auction with the same firm that sold the Bangor Mall and the former MBNA building in Belfast.
Maine jail guard assaulted Black inmate after other officer used racial slur, lawsuit claims
  • A Kennebec County Jail officer pepper-sprayed a Black inmate and slammed him against a table without cause after another guard directed a racial slur at the inmate in 2019, according to a civil rights lawsuit that was filed in federal court on Monday that claims the main officer involved has a history of racist incidents.
