Could a special football season be upon us?

Good morning and welcome to the September 20 edition of the Saints Insider newsletter.

The Saints return to the practice field Wednesday at they begin preparation for their game against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday at Lambeau Field. Meantime, here's what we have for you today in terms of Saints coverage:

Saints' historic road win augurs hope

Something extraordinary happened this weekend, an achievement you likely were unaware occurred. The Saints’ 20-17 victory against the Carolina Panthers on Monday night completed a historic trifecta for the "Big Three" local football teams in the New Orleans area. It marked the first time ever that the Saints, LSU and Tulane have won road games on the same weekend.

Michael Thomas gets into it

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas and Carolina Panthers defensive end Derrick Brown got into a verbal altercation that nearly became physical following the Saints' 20-17 win in Charlotte Monday night. Footage of the incident shows Thomas exchanging words with Brown as he works his way back toward the locker room, Patrick Magee reports.

Jamaal Williams sidelined indefinitely

Jamaal Williams’ recovery from the hamstring injury he suffered against the Carolina Panthers on Monday night will “take some time,” Saints coach Dennis Allen said Tuesday. What that means for his availability for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers is unclear, but it doesn’t sound good for the veteran running back.

A journeyman's career night

Tony Jones carried the rock for his rock Monday night. His rock is Rebecca Jones, his high school sweetheart who became his wife four months ago. Jones, pushed into duty after Jamaal Williams was injured, scored the first touchdown of his NFL career with a 2-yard run in the third quarter. He scored another one in the fourth that pretty much sealed the win -- and a career night for the former Notre Dame standout.

That's it for today. We'll have more news and analysis throughout the week as the Saints begin preparations for their road game against the Packers on Sunday in Green Bay, Wis. Also, we will have new editions of our Saints Insider podcasts on Wednesday and Friday, so make sure to check us out on YouTube.

Until next time, have a great day....
