Pay raises for teachers

with Matthew Albright | Assistant metro editor

Good morning! Here are some of our top reads from yesterday:

How to spend Louisiana's budget boom

Louisiana finds itself flush with cash this year, thanks to federal aid and better-than-expected tax revenues. So what does Gov. John Bel Edwards want to spend it on?

To name a few big things: Pay raises for teachers; more college scholarships; expanded early education; and, yes, even money for a new Mississippi River bridge in the Baton Rouge area. This story explains what Edwards is proposing to the Legislature.

More on Sunday night's standoff, evacuation

A neighborhood near Gardere Lane was evacuated late Sunday night after a man shot at sheriff's deputies and set the house he was in on fire.

We tracked down more details on what happened. It turns out the incident started when the man shot at his wife, the sheriff's office says. And she had a restraining order against him because of alleged domestic violence.

We also got more details on how the fire department put out the fire while under threat from a potential shooter. This story has everything we learned.
