‘All hands on deck’: A wildfire near the Louisiana-Texas border has consumed thousands of acres and into Wednesday evening authorities said it had not yet been brought under control. “It’s all hands on deck,” a sheriff’s deputy told reporter Tristan Baurick. Here's today's update. Authorities say a drought, coupled with record-breaking heat, has made much of Louisiana a potential tinderbox. Reporter Drew Broach has some of the triple-digit temps from across the state on Wednesday.
Restricting the Pontalba: The New Orleans City Council this morning overrode Mayor LaToya Cantrell's veto of a measure the council adopted to restrict the mayor's use of an apartment in the historic Pontalba in the French Quarter. Cantrell's use of the city-owned apartment has become a controversial in city politics of late.
Gulf watch: A broad area of low pressure off the coast of Central America is expected to eventually make its way into the Gulf of Mexico, forecasters say. This is the time of year when the tropical weather maps start to get busy. Stay tuned here on NOLA.com.
To Italy with love: Italy is being overrun by blue crabs and they’re threatening the fisheries there. So the country has embarked on a campaign to get Italians to eat their way out of the problem. Our dining writer, Ian McNulty, says our Louisiana restaurants could show them a thing or two about cooking (and eating) crabs. Solution journalism!
