After the lifting of sanctions last January, Iran is often referred to as the 'new hot spot’. The country sits on the 3^rd largest oil field in the world and the 2^nd largest in natural gas. There is an eagerness to invest in offshore exploration which will demand its own new ships, platforms and services. Last year the Iranian government announced an investment guarantee of 120 billion dollars. Meanwhile the Iranian maritime and offshore market place has made its first steps along the long road to fleet renewal, renovation and expansion and has started making investments in new building, repair and equipment. For example, South Korean shipbuilder Samkang M&T has won a 400 million dollar contract from Iranian shipbuilder Iran Shipbuilding & Offshore Industries Complex (ISOICO) and Iranian Tasdid Offshore Development Co. and the  Russian shipbuilding plant "Red Barricades” has signed a 1 billion dollar contract for the construction of five offshore drilling rigs for exploration and production of oil and gas in the Persian Gulf. These are just two examples of the large potential in Iran.
