Good morning, my busy bees! 🐝 Here’s the forecast: ☀️ 37 – 74° in Logan 🌤️ 49 – 75° in Salt Lake City ☀️ 52 – 82° in St. George Can you believe election day is only 18 days away? Unless you’ve been actively trying to avoid the news (or are living under a rock), you know that this midterm election is hotly contested here in Utah and around the nation. I asked a few weeks ago which issues mattered most to you, and many of you wrote back. Here are the highlights. (The following have been lightly edited for clarity and style.) The top policy concern across the board was the one affecting your wallets: inflation and property taxes. - Richard wrote in to talk about property taxes and said, “There should be a limit on how much they can be increased each year.”
- Dave mentioned the difficulties his parents are facing, “I have elderly parents that are on a fixed income, and they have to borrow money to cover these constant tax increases.”
- Curtis wrote, “Mine and my neighbors’ property taxes (increased) by nearly 25% ($800+) in one year!”
Katie McKellar wrote about property tax inflation back in August. Other homeowners have been noticing the same thing. Another big concern was distrust of our elected officials and worry over whether our democracy is headed in the right direction. - David wrote, “I see people who don't believe in equality. I see people who want to recognize a state religion. I see people who don't want to observe democratic principles of freedom to vote.”
- In addition to talking about her concerns with the economy, Pauline said, “The government has its hand in everything, regulating it all, so we don't live in a free enterprise country.”
The Deseret News has conducted a number of polls over the last few months that illustrate this. One asking how much voters would pay to keep former President Donald Trump and/or President Joe Biden from running again reveals interesting voter sentiments. And this national poll shows which issues push Republicans or Democrats over the edge when it comes to hot-button topics. Tell me: Keep ‘em coming. Which issues matter most to you?
