Weekly Roundup

What’s wrong with laundry list privileging?
So much has changed since the American College of Surgeons recommended laundry list privileging in the 1950s. At that time, many physicians had not completed approved residency programs in specific specialty areas—many were general practitioners or physicians trained on the job after they completed medical school. The costs and administrative problems associated with laundry list privileging grow as new procedures are added that require updates to laundry list privileges and accompanying predefined criteria. Because laundry list privileges are updated so infrequently, additional risk-associated issues may also result.
Annual physician burnout costs estimated at $4.6 billion

The annual cost of physician burnout is conservatively estimated at $4.6 billion, research published this week shows. The study, published in Annals of Internal Medicine, is one of the first attempts to estimate the cost of physician burnout to health systems, hospitals, and physician practices, the researchers wrote.

NPDB Guidebook updates clarify reporting requirements

In October 2018, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) released an update to the National Practitioner Data Bank’s (NPDB) Guidebook. This marks the first update since HRSA made significant changes to the rules in 2015. There are significant clarifications and new interpretations around NPDB reporting requirements that MSPs must be aware of to ensure the medical staff remains compliant with those requirements.

Understanding the unified medical staff

Since the 20th century, the organized medical staff has been a basic requirement for all hospitals. In 2014, CMS revised its CoPs to address an evolving trend across multiple hospitals in a health system: the unification of medical staffs. However, this revision came after the National Association Medical Staff Services (NAMSS) voiced concerns about several CMS proposed rules in 2013, particularly one concerning the organized medical staff.
