The ways of the past are no longer effective, and it’s up to you to provide your staff with the knowledge they need to improve the quality of care for your residents with dementia. This program will take a close look at setting up dementia care training for your facility. It will also focus on providing individualized transformative care using consistent strategies to help your facilities remain competitive and compliant.

Join expert speaker Kerry C. Mills, MPA, as she explains the basics of dementia and how care practices are changing. She will help you create a system to identify “fixable” behaviors or reactions as well as to provide your staff with everything they need to focus on their residents.

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

Understand why past practices for dementia care are ineffective and what to do differently
Create a system to identify “fixable” behaviors/reactions in residents with dementia

- Steer away from what can’t be done, and focus on what can be done
Learn why past practices don’t always mean best practice
- What else should we do?
Learn how to identify and respond to reversible symptoms of dementia (includes logs to use with residents)
- Share practices with staff on how to recognize these conditions early, allowing persons with dementia to have the greatest possible quality of life
Learn how to incorporate the seven basic interventions that everyone in the home should be using daily
- Utilize consistency across the board
Create an energized care team to work with dementia residents
- Empower your staff to increase satisfaction with their work

Meet the Speaker

Kerry C. Mills, MPA, earned recognition in the field of Alzheimer’s care as a regional manager for a pioneering Alzheimer’s healthcare organization, where she served for eight years. Her goal then and now is to change the perception of dementia in the public square. Mills has witnessed many success stories firsthand and knows that much of the despair and anguish of families can be overcome through education and training. As founder and president of Engaging Alzheimer's, LLC, she has had many opportunities to share her expertise and vision in the United States as well as in Canada, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and China. She co-authored I Care: A Handbook for Care Partners of People With Dementia and most recently authored Serving Residents With Dementia: Transformative Care Strategies for Assisted Living Providers. Mills is a regular guest on local radio stations and has been interviewed on PBS NewsHour with host Paul Solman as well as CBS television with Dr. Max Gomez.
