A Sense of Belonging and Connection

A strong sense of belonging is increasingly seen as a key part of a successful college experience and leads to stronger academic performance. But, colleges can't assume that students will automatically make connections with peers and professors without some assistance. While students, faculty, and staff members may be craving connection more than ever, remote classes, social distancing, and constant anxiety have taken their toll.

More institutions are trying creative ways to encourage connections, designing campus spaces to facilitate positive interactions that help students develop relationships with one another and faculty members. Those interactions lead to a greater sense of belonging.

Reimagining the Student Experience explores the many forces affecting the student experience: the projected enrollment cliff, demands from parents and lawmakers, the changing student demographics, and new expectations from the racial-justice movements.
