Counter workplace uncertainty with strong job descriptions The relationship of hospital size, medical staff office size, and the number of practitioners credentialed isn’t a sharp line. MSPs’ titles and responsibilities are fluid. Well-formed job descriptions foster consistency that counterbalances these uncertainties. MSPs can reference the descriptions to understand their responsibilities, budget worktime, and address requests from practitioners that fall outside their purview. Managers can use the information to establish expectations, create time-management logs, and determine appropriate staffing levels. Read more. Operate an effective credentials committee The success of a credentials committee depends on the processes and people involved. In The Credentials Committee Manual, former credentials committee member/chair Mark A. Smith, MD, MBA, FACS, provides practical advice on committee structures and duties, both current and future. He offers tables and forms for managing meetings, as well as tools MSPs can use for effective committee operations. Read more. Spot red flags in peer evaluations Peer evaluations, which speak to a practitioner’s current competence and abilities, play a key role in this process. MSPs and medical staff leaders must set guidelines for selecting peers who can provide high-quality, trustworthy, and timely information. Ask applicants to identify references who have current knowledge of their abilities, typically within the past two years. If an applicant has been out of training less than two years, one of the peer evaluations should be from the program director of the most recently completed training. Sometimes, applicants may name peers who don’t fit the bill to cover up trouble spots in their history or to otherwise make their application more appealing.
