Good morning,

Welcome to Friday's newsletter from The Scotsman.

Are you or someone you know self-isolating?

Thousands across the UK are now having to self-isolate due to contact with Covid-19 positive people, leading to staff shortages for many employers. Now, critical workers are to be exempt from self-isolation under new Scottish Government plans.

It is understood the scheme, to be announced today will cover people working in fields including health and social care.

Two years of Boris

Boris Johnson was elected Conservative leader two years ago today, seeing off Jeremy Hunt in a race that felt more like a procession than an actual contest.

A lot has happened in those two years, not least the global Covid-19 pandemic.

The Olympics is here

Steph Twell and Eilish McColgan will make history after being named among the dozen Scots runners selected by Team GB for the Olympic Games in Tokyo starting today.

The 12, which also includes Laura Muir Jemma Reekie, Jake Wightman and Andrew Butchart, form one-sixth of the track and field squad heading to Japan.

Good luck to the whole of Team GB. Here's how you can watch the opening ceremony.

Scotland's hottest day

The heat is also triggering a few thunderstorms while grey and murky skies continue to plague some eastern coastal areas and the Northern Isles in Scotland.
