~W.R. Pursche, The Canine Commandments Spot trotted ahead of us on Creek Road with his tail raised and wagging like a metronome. That cloudy summer day, he joined my husband Spence, daughter Ellen, and me halfway to the bridge across Deer Creek. I’d lured Ellen, on break from her epidemiology doctoral studies, out for a walk with the chance of meeting our neighborhood friendly Beagle. Spot sniffed chicory, crown vetch, and tree trunks on both sides of the road. Every forty yards or so, he craned his head. If we’d veered onto a side road, he would circle back, gallop past, and run in front of us again. Suddenly he howled and tore off into the underbrush. (Keep reading) |
