Cruise the coast By Heather McRea | This week in Coast Lines: Hopping a trolley is part of the summer experience in several coastal towns. Plus, the Pageant of the Masters has a very California theme this year and a blaze near Laguna Beach’s coast was controlled quickly and officials say it was in the planning. Here’s what’s happening along the Southern California coast. |

| Trolley summers Dana Point City Manager Mike Killebrew skips the car (and traffic and parking headaches) and hops the beach town’s trolley a couple of times a week. In much of south Orange County, visitors and residents can get around during the summer just using the local trolley routes. It’s a great way to experience the coast, riders said. “People stay longer than if you just had your car right there next to you. They tend to walk around more and enjoy what we have to offer,” Killebrew said, adding that, “Honestly, I’ve never seen someone on a trolley upset. They’re always happy and enjoying life.” See more. |

Tableau vivants The always popular Pageant of the Masters has opened for its summer run in Laguna Beach; its theme: “Gold Coast: Treasures of California.” This year’s show encourages a road trip to visit the places that make the state and its coast special. | Fire prep Where thousands of acres of wildland have been preserved leading almost up to the ocean in Laguna Beach is a corridor of concern for fire officials with homes all around. And this week, it appears a firework sparked a blaze, just the fire that officials from multiple agencies had sat around and planned for weeks earlier. “The fire went well and everybody is grateful. It was good to test the system and the system worked,” Laguna Beach Fire Chief Niko King said of the quickly contained blaze, but he still delivered a warning about being prepared for the upcoming fire season.
