| | Congratulations to Tim Elliott, Kevin Litchfield, Sarah Blagden, Mariam Jamal-Hanjani and Maise Albakir who’ll receive up to £1.7m to develop ‘LungVax’ – the world’s first vaccine to prevent lung cancer in high-risk populations. LungVax uses the ChAdOx adenoviral vector, which was developed for the highly successful Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, to induce antigen-specific T cell responses. The vaccine will target a cocktail of hotspot clonal neoantigens in known driver genes for lung cancer, and additionally include two tumour-associated antigen targets. Tim Elliott and colleagues aim to produce and pre-clinically test the vaccine. If successful, the vaccine will move straight into a Phase 1b/2 clinical trial led by Mariam Jamal-Hanjani. The study complements existing early detection efforts for people who are at greatest risk and could transform lung cancer survival, enabling vital first steps towards lung cancer prevention. We co-fund LungVax with the CRIS Cancer Foundation. Learn more about the project. Keep scrolling to find out more about our funding opportunities below and what’s happening in cancer research this week. Kind regards, Iain Foulkes Executive Director Research & Innovation CEO Cancer Research Horizons Cancer Research UK

| | Recent research published on Nature Genetics has found malfunctioning immune cells in healthy carriers of BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations for the first time. At the University of Cambridge, Austin Reed, Sara Pensa, John Marioni and Walid T. Khaled created the largest single cell RNA sequencing dataset of the normal human breast in the world – 800,000 cells from 55 donors – to unveil early-stage cell changes in BRCA1/2 carriers. The study found signs of immune exhaustion in normal breast tissue from Brca1/2 carriers. This will inform novel approaches for breast cancer early detection and prevention. | |
| | | | Are you working in personalised designs for clinical trials? IDENT, a research project funded by us is hosting a workshop to help you uptake statistical strategies in practical implementation. The workshop will take place in Bath from 29 April - 1 May. This workshop will include (1) a full-day short course to introduce some key concepts and innovative statistical methodology, and (2) a two-day workshop that consists of research talks given by prominent scholars in the field. Hear from recognised statistical methodologists, clinicians, practitioners and regulatory professionals on how to develop and implement innovative study designs in modern clinical trials. Registration can be done for course only, or workshop only, or both. | |

| | Despite attending numerous training sessions... I had a nagging feeling that open research was more expansive than just data management and open access publishing.” |
| The latest in our Research with Integrity series sees Dr Andrew Porter, Research Integrity and Training Adviser at the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute, take on the sheer amount of time it can take to keep abreast of the latest open science best practice. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments and also look out for The University of Manchester’s Open Research conference in April, where you can discover more ongoing open research activities and beyond. |
