| | We’re committing a further £8m for our Brain Tumour Centres of Excellence over the next five years. The Children’s Brain Tumour Centre of Excellence and Glioma Brain Tumour Centre of Excellence are building world-leading research communities and growing critical capacity in the UK. Our boost in investment will help train the next generation of researchers, increase our understanding of brain tumour biology and identify new therapeutic opportunities. The funding renewal was announced at our Brain Tumour Conference to over 300 researchers attending from across the world. |

Research with integrity – time to recognise postdocs |
| Postdocs provide much of the fabric that underpins research integrity, says Andrew Porter, Research Integrity and Training Adviser at the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute. In our latest research integrity column, Andrew recognises the role that postdocs play in supporting research integrity. From bringing new research practice to the lab and championing open research principles to training peers and fostering transparent conversations, postdocs play an essential role in building a health research culture. |

| | Our observers scheme gives early career researchers a chance to view our panel discussions and interviews, setting them up for success by demystifying the process. To date, more than 220 of you have had a peak behind the scenes, with 98% saying it helped you gain a better understanding of a successful application. Not only has this scheme helped many of you to go on to successfully apply for your own grants, but your honest feedback has also helped us roll out better accessibility guidance and ensure that researchers from underrepresented groups are making use of this opportunity.
| |
| | | | In our latest Cancer News for Researchers article, you can hear directly from two researchers, Matt Coelho and Haiyan Zheng, aboutjust how useful the observer scheme was to them. Whether you have a clear research proposal in mind and want to shape your application or if you’re looking for inspiration, Matt and Haiyan lay out how to get the most from the experience.

Celebrating our peer reviewers |
| This Peer Review week, we’re celebrating the people that help us to create impactful research. Only with the expertise and commitment of those who sit on our panels and committees and participate in independent peer reviews, can we continue to accelerate progress against cancer. Meet the excellent scientists, policy specialists and patient representatives who have served on our Expert Review Panels in the past year. |

| | Come along on 7 October to learn more about the research we do, and the partners we work with at our Manchester Centre. The Centre award funds five research themes: Cancer Early Detection, Digital Cancer, Experimental Cancer Medicine, Integrative Pathology and Radiotherapy BioAdaption. Joachim Weischenfeldt (The University of Copenhagen) will give a keynote speech about his group’s work on the clonal evolution of cancer. Join us to hear from and network with theme leads, researchers, PhD students, members of our other centres and leads from other partner organisations.
| |
| | | | If you’re a researcher, clinician or industry representative with an interest in early cancer research, you won’t want to miss out on this event. There will be an opportunity to hear from a range of speakers, learn about new developments in this field and get an update on the institute's achievements and future plans. The event features keynote speakers Titus Brinker (German Cancer Research Center) and Professor Simon Leedham (University of Oxford). Follow #ECISymposium2024 on socials and take part in the discussion. | |
