Dear Voornaam

Join us on 20 June from 1-2 PM for the first webinar in our new series supporting data-enabled cancer research.

In this first session, Research Data 101, youll hear from our internal data experts on simple approaches to make sure data is findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable. Theyll also cover how were supporting researchers to maximise the impact of data and deliver the best possible patient outcomes. Attendees will have the chance to ask the panel about our research data strategy and what were doing to unleash the potential of cancer data.

PROFESSOR JEFFREY WILLIAM POLLARD

Were deeply saddened by Jeffrey Pollards death on 1 May. An esteemed scientist and a wonderful mentor, Jeff pioneered research in reproductive biology and the tumour microenvironment.

Jeff had longstanding links to Cancer Research UK, he carried out his PhD at ICRF and held several CRUK programme grants. In recent years, his research focused on the mechanisms of action of female sex steroid hormones in controlling cell proliferation and on the tumour microenvironment of breast cancer. He was the first to demonstrate the protumoural role of macrophages in cancer.

REGISTER FOR OUR VIRTUAL SESSION ON RISK AND EARLY DIAGNOSIS

Join us on 31 May for our spring virtual session on implementing risk in the diagnosis of cancer. Chaired by Jon Emery (University of Melbourne), the event will showcase some of the latest research into risk and its potential to support earlier cancer diagnosis.

Our expert panel will discuss their research into the optimisation of current pathways using risk prediction and risk stratification, and the barriers and enablers to implementing risk innovation into policy and practice.

A PARTNERSHIP TO ACCELERATE GLOBAL PROGRESS AGAINST CANCER

Weve joined G7 Cancer, an initiative set up by the French National Cancer Institute to unite the leading global cancer organisations, strengthen international cooperation and encourage the sharing of knowledge and expertise.

This week, we attended G7s first meeting in Paris, with representatives signing a memorandum of understanding which set the cooperation framework and defined the priority actions as setting up:

  • an international conference on data strategy for paediatric cancers
  • an international dialogue on pancreatic, liver, oesophagus, and stomach cancers
  • a working group on cancer outcome inequities
  • a working group on prevention and precancer
