Dear Voornaam,

Welcome to your weekly Cancer Research UK Research Update email.

Teenagers and young adults are less likely to participate in research, which can lead to poorer outcomes and lower survival.

This week our Experimental Cancer Medicine Centres network has published a roadmap to improve access to clinical trials and biobanking for young people with cancer.

Its written for people who design, deliver, review, approve, and fund clinical research and was developed in collaboration with researchers, experts in care and people affected by young peoples cancers. The roadmap showcases pockets of progress and charts a path for the community to make clinical research more age inclusive, so everyone can benefit from research advances.

REPRESENTATION, RETENTION, AND HOPE

Enshrined in the mentorship programme set up by Black in Cancer to match students with mentor scientists is community support and encouragement for Black researchers.

On the back of its first successful cycle, we spoke to mentor-mentee pairing Melville and Jamie about their experiences.

Melville joined having some idea of her career aspirations and interests, but not fully knowing how to get there. She was matched with Jamie, an academic living and working in Manchester whose expertise is in cancer immunology.
