Your May 2022 Research Update

Dear Voornaam,

Welcome to your weekly Cancer Research UK Research Update email.

I’m pleased to share news about Cancer Research Horizons Seed Fund with you today.

We know that the pathway to innovation is difficult on multiple fronts, and at present, not enough of our world-leading research is progressing from the lab to the clinic.

Many promising innovations are too early in development for industry or investors to engage with, meaning great ideas can stall. Our Cancer Research Horizons Seed Fund bridges that gap in the translational pipeline by investing in promising, early-stage opportunities, worldwide, from within and beyond the Cancer Research UK network.

Launching this week, the £15m fund builds on Horizons’ long-term experience of establishing and growing successful startups and companies. We will invest in innovative therapeutics, medtech, and diagnostics, with a broad remit to support projects with potential benefits for people affected by cancer.

So if you have a promising innovation that can no longer be funded via traditional research funding routes, or are looking for funds to grow your startup, read on and get in touch with colleagues at Cancer Research Horizons. Our team will support you through the application process and work with you to build a compelling investment proposition.

Also, this week registration is now open for the inaugural Black in Cancer Conference in London, 10–11 October. We’ve partnered with Black in Cancer on this important event to bring together scientists, advocacy groups and partners from across the globe to showcase Black excellence in cancer research and medicine. Read on to see what’s in store and register now to secure your place to join us this autumn.

FIRST MAP OF MAJOR CHROMOSOMAL CHANGES THAT OCCUR IN CANCER

A new framework for understanding patterns of copy number alterations has enabled a set of copy number signatures to be derived from different experimental assays.

Christopher Steel (UCL), Nischalan Pillay (UCL), Ludmil Alexandrov (UCSD) and colleagues used AI techniques developed through Cancer Grand Challenges to analyse the genomes of more than 9,800 people with 33 different types of cancer. They identified 21 copy-number signatures that were common to all cancer types.

The copy-number map will be hosted on COSMIC, and the SigProfiler artificial intelligence toolkit is freely available to others in the research community.
