REFLECTING ON DIVERSITY IN FUNDING THIS BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Especially during Black History Month, we want to have honest conversations about diversity in research. In 2021 we made an action plan to improve diversity within our research community. Earlier this year we published our second report on diversity in our research funding, in which we see some improvements in equity, but we still have a long way to go.

To tackle these inequalities, we introduced some strategic opportunities, events and partnerships. Only last week we held the first Black in Cancer conference, which brought Black researchers together from around the globe.

A diverse and inclusive research community allows us to draw on a wide range of ideas from a variety of backgrounds, which maximises scientific innovation and creativity.

NEW PREVENTION FUNDING SCHEME FOR DISCOVERY SCIENTISTS

We're introducing a Biology to Prevention Award to support collaborative, translational research that will build a greater biological and mechanistic understanding of cancer aetiology, risk and incidence and ultimately lead to future preventive interventions.

This award can fund pilot studies (around £100k over 1-year) through to larger projects (up to £600k for up to 5 years). The current round is open until 12 January 2023.

BRINGING BIOLOGY TO PREVENTION RESEARCH WEBINAR

Join us at 2pm on 23 November for a webinar to learn more about our new Biology to Prevention Award.

You can put your questions to Professors Kay-Tee Khaw and Karen Brownour (Chair and Vice-chair of Prevention and Population Research Committee, respectively) and Dave Crosby, our Head of Prevention and Early Detection Research, as they introduce the new award, how it fits into our research strategy, and provide tips on what makes a successful application.

DISCOVERY TO TRANSLATION – A JOURNEY WORTH TAKING

There are many challenges when translating your research into patient impact – but it is always worth overcoming them says Catharine West, founder of ManTRa Diagnostics.

In her academic research Catharine developed hypoxia-associated gene signatures for lung cancers, which allow for more targeted treatment and can improve patient prognosis. Commercialisation through ManTRa Diagnostics has made her signature more attractive to funders and is accelerating the journey of bringing the diagnostics to cancer patients.

We talked to Catharine about her experience with founding ManTRa Diagnostics, the challenges she has faced, and her advice on starting a spinout company.
