Congratulations to Rebecca Fitzgerald, Bart Vanhaesebroeck, and Frances Balkwill who are among the newly elected Fellows of The Royal Society, in recognition of their significant contributions to cancer research throughout their careers.

Rebecca has led groundbreaking investigations into the early detection of oesophageal cancer. She received the Don Listwin Award in 2021.

Bart received this year’s Innovation & Entrepreneurship Horizons Explorer Recognition Award for advancing the understanding of PI 3-kinase enzymes’ role in cancer, inflammation, and immunity.

Frances is a pioneer of research into cancer-related inflammation and the tumour microenvironment. She’s also a leader in science public engagement, setting up the Centre of the Cell and advising on the Science Museum’s 2021 exhibition, Cancer Revolution.

#CRUKFunded: HPV vaccine helps to reduce health inequalities

Peter Sasieni and colleagues have shown that the UK national HPV vaccination programme is associated with a reduction in cervical disease in all socioeconomic groups.

The study analysed cancer data from NHS England for vaccinated and unvaccinated women aged 20-64 years to examine if the already high HPV vaccination effectiveness continued in an additional year of follow-up.

The results published in the BMJ demonstrated a decrease of cervical cancer and grade 3 cervical intraepithelial neoplasia across all deprivation groups, especially in women offered routine vaccination.

This shows that well executed public health interventions can both improve health and reduce health inequalities.
