Dear Voornaam Welcome to your weekly Cancer Research UK Research Update email. To celebrate International Women’s Day, we’re bringing together women from across our postdoctoral network to connect, collaborate and tackle the barriers to progression for women in cancer research. Postdoc futures: empowering women in cancer research is a free half day event on 7 March at the Royal Society in London open to all Cancer Research UK-funded women postdocs. Join inspiring talks and pick up practical career tips from successful women in academia and business. You can also take part in roundtable discussions on career progression and experiences with peers. |

AI PARTNERSHIP TO DETERMINE NOVEL CDC7 INHIBITION TREATMENT OPTIONS Currently no CDC7 inhibitors have progressed to Phase 3 trials. A new partnership between Cancer Research Horizons, our innovation engine, and Turbine, a simulation-driven drug discovery company, is taking on the challenge. The collaboration will leverage Turbine’s Simulated Cell™ AI platform to simulate how cancer cells respond to the inhibition of CDC7. This will help identify which cancer types and patient populations could benefit from treatment from CRT’2199, Cancer Research Horizons’ small molecule CDC7 kinase inhibitor. |

| IMPLEMENTING GENOMICS AT A NATIONAL SCALE Our Stratified Medicine Programme 2 demonstrates that routine genomic testing can be delivered at scale within complex healthcare systems like the NHS. The programme involved implementing an extensive genetic screening infrastructure across the UK to identify patients eligible for the National Lung Matrix Trial, a precision medicine trial for non-small cell lung cancer. Over 7 years, more than 7,000 patient biopsy samples were analysed with over 400 patients subsequently enrolled in the trial. Don White, Programme Manager, talked to us about what’s behind the largest study of its kind, how close collaboration contributed to its success and the impact it will have on the future of precision medicine. |

THE ALLIANCE TAKING ON BRAIN CANCER Professor Richard Gilbertson, Director of the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre, has dedicated his career to understanding and treating brain tumours. Now, he’s on the verge of introducing a new antibody that targets the carcinogenic ZFTA fusion protein that is behind ependymomas, one of the most common brain cancers. The Antibody Alliance Laboratory – a collaboration between Cancer Research Horizons and AstraZeneca – has been central to building this antibody. Combining academic rigour with agile bioengineering, the lab partners directly with researchers like Richard Gilbertson, to push forward antibody discovery projects and create therapies for patients. |
