Dear Voornaam

This Peer Review week, we want to say a big thank you to our committee and panel members, patient and public representatives and other reviewers who help us fund the most impactful research and accelerate the progress against cancer.

In the meantime, we’re exploring the future of publishing from different perspectives across the industry. We had a chat with Natalie Le Bot, a Chief Editor at Nature Communications, on a shift in the method of publishing that could improve research integrity, reproducibility and quality.

Read along to find out what publishers think of the future of publishing and how are they adapting.

NEW REQUIREMENTS ON SEX IN EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN

We’ve put in place new requirements on integrating male and female sexes in the design of experiments described in all funding applications that involve animals, human and animal tissues and cells.

These new requirements will help build evidence around the role biological sex plays in cancer.

We’re rolling out this change gradually and we have scope to grant exceptions in robustly justified cases. Get in touch for support, or to discuss your questions or concerns on how the changes might apply to your research.

THE POTENTIAL OF CAR T-CELL THERAPY

Austin was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia when he was two years old. In the latest podcast episode of That Cancer Conversation, Austin’s parents share how cancer has affected their family and how taking part in the T cell trial, CARPALL, has allowed Austin to be cancer free.

“There’s the leap of faith, there’s trusting us to try and do our best and trusting that this process might lead to better options for children in the future” says Sara Ghorashian, consultant haematologist and honorary senior clinical lecturer at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health. Sara was lead scientist on the CARPALL trial and made Austin's CAR T-cells in the lab.

Hear more about Austin’s journey, Sara’s work on the trial and the Pac Man-like game she’s developing that helps children better understand their treatment.
