Dear Voornaam,

We will be introducing a new funding scheme this autumn to support more high-quality clinical research that addresses key clinical questions while enhancing understanding of biological mechanisms.

Opening in September 2024, this new scheme replaces our current clinical funding schemes with a single, scalable scheme composed of three interconnected modules: clinical trials, experimental medicine and sample collection. We want to encourage bold and innovative clinical research that also advances biological understandings, and we hope this modular approach will allow researchers to ask for what they need, to do the research that they want to do.

This new funding scheme, and our refreshed clinical research statement of intent that sits alongside it, have been shaped by our clinical research community. We thank those who took part in this consultation and welcome feedback as it evolves. We look forward to receiving ideas that can help bridge the gap between discovery science and clinical research in patients.
