Dear Voornaam

In the year since we launched our Research Data Strategy weve made great progress toward our goal of maximising the scientific value of data for cancer research.

Were creating a community of data experts through hosting workshops and events such as our new webinar series and our inaugural data conference next February. Weve built partnerships with Health Data Research UK and other data centred organisations. And weve supported patient and public involvement through collaboration with advocacy groups such as use MY data.

Weve also begun shaping our cancer data driven detection programme to combine the strengths of our multidisciplinary research community to help us prevent, detect and diagnose cancer.

And now on the first anniversary of our data strategy, were launching our new trusted research programme to offer data research and information governance advice and infrastructure that ensures you have the support you need to safely and effectively collect and reuse sensitive cancer data.

Find out more about the full scope of this new programme and how to access advisory services or our secure trusted research environment.

NEW IN THE LANCET: RADIOTHERAPY IN EARLY BREAST CANCER

Results from the phase 3 IMPORT HIGH trial, published in The Lancet, show that giving some breast cancer patients a targeted additional dose of radiotherapy at the same time as treatment to the whole breast cuts the time taken to complete treatment by at least a week.

Charlotte Coles et al tested simultaneous integrated tumour-bed boost delivered after whole-breast radiotherapy against sequential boost with the aim of reducing treatment duration while maintaining local cancer-control and toxicity.

2,617 patients were randomly allocated to receive one of three treatments. In all groups, 5-year ipsilateral breast tumour relapse incidence was lower than expected regardless of boost sequencing. The authors also found that adverse event rates were low using small boost volumes and that simultaneous integrated boost was safe and reduced patient visits.

75 YEARS OF NHS CANCER CARE

From the first clinical trial testing lumpectomies for breast cancer to introducing Tamoxifen, the HPV vaccine and CAR-T cell therapy research, technology and data have transformed NHS cancer care over the last seven decades.

Todays NHS is seeing more people with suspected cancer than ever before. Its also diagnosing more cancers earlier and helping more people survive the disease. But the NHS is also under serious pressure and facing a crisis in its workforce.

The NHS needs investment and reform to keep up, and were uniquely placed to help with that.

OUR QUESTIONS ON THE NHS LONG TERM WORKFORCE PLAN FOR ENGLAND

The recently published NHS workforce plan for England is a welcome step in the right direction to address the services staffing issues and waiting times.

The plan promises more investment in training, commitments on cancer and to regularly refresh the plan to integrate advances in technology and treatments.

Yet, the plan does not go far enough to address the full scale of the challenge on recruitment or retention. It also fails to include detailed estimates of growth needed for key professionals and how to increase staff numbers in the key specialties essential to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
