Dear Voornaam

Its Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and on 27 September were bringing together a panel of international experts to explore how to unlock the potential of immunotherapy in children and young people.

Join our free webinar to meet Martin Pule (UCL), Elaine Mardis (Nationwide Childrens Hospital) and Anastasios Karadimitris (Imperial College London) and hear them discuss their experiences in genetic engineering of T-cells, translational cancer genomics and haematology.

Children and young people with cancer face distinct challenges, from the type of cancer to the treatments impact take part in the conversations that will help accelerate progress in the field.

22M REINVESTED INTO CANCER RESEARCH IN THE LAST YEAR

In 2022/23, our innovation engine, Cancer Research Horizons, held more than 800 meetings with researchers, resulting in 118 inventions, 106 commercial deals and 12 strategic alliances. The activities of the Therapeutic Innovation and Commercial Partnerships teams generated 79m in income, leaving 22m to reinvest in Cancer Research UK after distributions to partners and operating costs.

The recently released Cancer Research Horizons Annual Review drills into the numerous ways in which the diverse teams under the Horizons umbrella drive innovations that foster new approaches to cancer detection and treatment, and support startup companies that will improve how cancer is treated.

LAURA DANIELSON ON CHILDRENS AND YOUNG PEOPLES CANCER RESEARCH

In That Cancer Conversation: One to One, Laura Danielson talks about how her experiences have shaped her role as research lead for childrens and young peoples cancer.

After a PhD and postdoc in New York, Laura bought a 1-way ticket to the UK to do a Cancer Research UK-funded postdoc in Louis Cheslers lab in the ICR. While working on therapies for high-risk neuroblastoma, Laura was increasingly drawn to translating her skills and passion. Her first role after the lab was in science communications, followed by the strategy role she has now, in which she's working to reduce the barriers and drive progress in children's and young peoples research.

THE UK REJOINS HORIZON EUROPE

In welcome news, last week the Prime Minister confirmed that the UK can rejoin the EUs flagship funding scheme for scientific research. Under the new deal, the UK will pay an average of 2.2bn a year into Horizon Europe and the Copernicus Earth observation satellite programme.

The news came shortly after we published results from a survey of our researchers which showed 75% favoured association to Horizon Europe. The survey was part of our wider advocacy efforts, where we work closely with other organisations to make the case for the best environment for research.

Our sincere thanks to everyone in our research community who provided us with insight and evidence to advocate for association.

The new agreement will now need to be ratified by EU member states.

ENHANCE YOUR DATA WITH THE DATA INNOVATION AWARDS

The Cancer Research Horizons Data Innovation Awards can provide you with up to 75k funding to clean, curate, annotate, link and store your data and maximise its commercial potential.

Under a new partnership between Cancer Research Horizons and Sonrai Analytics, recipients of the Data Innovation Awards can now also get 12 months' access to Sonrai Discovery to further enhance their datasets.

Sonrai Discovery is a cloud-based AI platform that helps to streamline the data cleaning and integration process across research data of various types and from different sources. The platform can also be used to generate further analytical insights and accelerate research.

THE SINGLE-CELL CRISPR CAPABILITY OF OUR FUNCTIONAL GENOMICS CENTRE

The Functional Genomics Centre a joint venture between AstraZeneca and Cancer Research Horizons uses pooled CRISPR screening to identify new targets for cancer drug discovery.

But pooled CRISPR screens have limitations they require extensive data analysis, secondary screens, and a lengthy process to validate potential drug targets whereas single-cell CRISPR screens provide direct genotype to phenotype correlation.

Single-cell CRISPR platforms provide more information on potential drug targets, which increases the chances of finding the right target. In the last year, the centre has collaborated with EMBLs European Bioinformatics Institute to build its single-cell CRISPR capability.

A NEW RESOURCE HOW CRAIG MACKAY ENABLES DRUG TARGET EVALUATION

Given the huge attrition rate of new drug candidates, target evaluation is clearly vital.

In a recent review published on NAR Cancer, Craig MacKay and his colleagues from Cancer Research Horizons compiled key, free and easy-to-use resources to reduce the attrition. The team generated a comprehensive overview of publicly available datasets that help inform target evaluation and subsequent in-house studies.

There is an under-utilised wealth of datasets from cell lines, animal models and patient samples that are publicly available, free to access and that can be used to support cancer target evaluation, says Craig.

Find out more about how to utilise this resource for your study.
