Dear Voornaam

Each year, we have the privilege of receiving hundreds of promising grant applications spanning research into cancer aetiology, prevention, detection and treatment. This research holds the key to accelerating discoveries about cancer that can lead to real improvements in patient outcomes.

That’s why I am pleased to announce our latest awardees from the autumn funding round. I'm incredibly proud of the work our research community is doing, and I hope you will join me in congratulating these new grant holders.

We’ll feature them and their research over the next few weeks on social media – follow along with #CRUKfunded.

Kind regards,
Iain Foulkes

CANCER CASES PROJECTED TO RISE

New modelling published in our report Cancer in the UK: Overview 2023 shows that if current trends continue, new cancer diagnoses will rise from around 378,000 cases each year now (2016-2018), to 506,000 by 2038-2040.

This projected increase in cancer cases is mainly due to the growing and ageing population – by 2040, it is projected that 6 in 10 of new cancer cases will be in people aged 70 and over (up from around 5 in 10 currently).

Cancer survival in the UK is lagging behind comparable countries and the NHS is not on track to achieve its ambition of diagnosing 75% of cancers at stage 1 or 2 by 2028. Our report highlights the key challenges cancer services and patients are facing.

ADD YOUR NAME TO OUR PETITION TO THE PM

We want the Prime Minister to commit to taking action to improve the experience and outcomes of people affected by cancer.

We are calling on the UK government to:

  • ensure the upcoming Major Conditions Strategy is ambitious, fully-funded and listens to the voices and evidence of the cancer community
  • commit to a longer-term strategy for cancer which focusses on transforming cancer research, diagnosis, treatment and patient experience

ADVANCE YOUR RESEARCH WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART CRISPR TECHNOLOGY

Would pooled CRISPR screens, and support with initial assay design, Cas9 cell line generation, bioinformatic analysis and interpretation of the screen data, help your research identify and validate new drug targets and approaches?

The teams at the Functional Genomics Centre can help. Cancer Research Horizons and Astra Zeneca set up the centre to leverage their combined expertise in cutting-edge CRISPR technology. Since the centre launched in 2018, its teams have conducted over 400 pooled screens and created over 100 Cas9 cell lines.

If you are interested in accessing the Functional Genomics Centre's screening capabilities, contact Beatrice Lana for an informal chat about your project ideas. Proposals are reviewed every 2 months, with the next deadline coming up on 13 February.

NEW MILESTONE FOR CAMBRIDGE CANCER RESEARCH HOSPITAL

With a full planning application submitted for construction, a new specialist cancer research hospital will soon be part of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

The Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital will bring together clinical expertise from Addenbrooke’s Hospital and world-class scientists from the University of Cambridge in a new state-of-the-art facility for the east of England.

“The collaboration between patients, physicians and scientists in the new hospital will undoubtedly change the way cancer is treated for the better, across the region, the UK and the world,” said Richard Gilbertson, Director of the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre and Research Lead for this project.
