Dear Voornaam,

Welcome to your weekly Cancer Research UK Research Update email.

To mark the start of Childhood Cancer Awareness month, our latest podcast episode features a conversation with Professor Richard Gilbertson. Richard is a paediatric oncology clinician scientist and is the Director of the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre. He has dedicated his career to understanding more about childhood brain tumours and is known for his work identifying different types of medulloblastoma and ependymoma – two of the most common kinds of childhood brain tumour.

Richard talks about the challenges and successes of the childhood cancer research community, how he sees the future of the field and some of the transformative discoveries his lab has made on the origins and biology of childhood brain cancers.

PARTNERSHIP WITH GOSH TO SUPPORT PHDS IN YOUNG PEOPLE’S CANCERS

We’ve partnered with Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity to drive progress in children and young people’s cancers.

The charity will contribute up to £750,000 to support additional PhD studentships at the Cancer Research UK City of London Centre from 2023–27, in research specifically focused on children and young people’s cancers. This additional investment builds on the children and young people’s cancer research theme at the Centre and is an exciting first partnership between our two charities.

PREVENTING CANCER: THE ONLY WAY FORWARD

Estimates suggest that by 2040, around 30 million new cancer cases could be expected annually. In The Lancet, the Global Burden of Disease Study collaborators report on their effort to examine the relationship between indicators of metabolic, occupational, environmental, and behavioural risk factors, and cancers globally. The authors found 4.45 million deaths and 105 million disability-adjusted life-years were lost as a result of these risk factors.
