Dear Voornaam,
Welcome to your weekly Cancer Research UK Research Update email.
The ESMO Congress took place in Paris over 9–13 September, with many researchers from the Cancer Research UK community participating. Our chief clinician, Professor Charles Swanton, presented the latest evidence from the TRACERx lung study that supports new thinking on how air pollution can cause non-small cell lung cancer in people who have never smoked. While smoking remains the biggest risk factor for lung cancer, the team has identified the mechanism by which exposure to particulate matter in the air promotes the growth of cells in the lungs carrying EGFR mutations.
Also this week, I’m pleased to introduce Cancer Research Horizon’s Innovation & Entrepreneurship Awards, which are now open for submissions. This is your chance to put yourself forward or nominate someone outstanding for innovation in oncology. Read on and apply by 28 October.
Kind regards Iain
Iain Foulkes

| OUR NEW NARRATIVE CV FORMAT CVs are an important tool in assessing grant applications, but conventional formats can have a narrow focus and lack the opportunity for researchers to share the broader context of their career path.
We’re introducing narrative CVs across all of our funding schemes to allow applicants to demonstrate the wider impact of their contributions, skills and outputs. This change will make sure we attract promising talent from all backgrounds. |
