Dear Voornaam, Welcome to your weekly Cancer Research UK Research Update email.
Most people are aware of the positive impact Cancer Research UK and our research community has had on the cancer problem. What is less well known is our role and impact on the wider economy and life science sector specifically.
Last financial year, £1.8bn was invested in cancer research in the UK through public and private funds – for our part, Cancer Research UK invested £421m of this – about 20%. Our contribution rises to 50% if we only include public investment. Our primary interest at Cancer Research UK is, of course, patient impact – however the other aspect to this is the economic benefits these investments can bring to UK plc.
We recently commissioned an external consultancy to help make the economic case for investing in cancer research. They looked at the economic and societal impact in terms of job creation and economic output, you can see the full report here. When taken altogether, incredibly, every £1 invested in cancer research generated £2.80 of economic benefits.
So what? You might reasonably ask. As researchers and scientists our focus has to be on patient impact. However, demonstrating the wider economic benefits provides further justification for greater levels of government investment in cancer research and life science in general. The stronger our sector, the more success we can have in translating science, securing private investment and accelerating benefits for patients.
Also this week, we’re delighted to announce the shortlist for the Excellence in Cancer Research Nursing category of the Royal College of Nursing’s 2022 Nursing Awards. Congratulations to the finalists, the winner will be announced in October.

NEW REPORT SHOWS CANCER RESEARCH IS GOOD FOR THE ECONOMY The report, Economic Impact of Cancer Research Investment, examined the value of cancer research and development to the UK economy. It found that, for every £1 spent on Cancer Research UK-funded research in the UK, £2.80 of benefit was generated for the UK economy. |

| "WE KNOW THAT CANCER RESEARCH SAVES AND IMPROVES LIVES. WHAT IS LESS WELL KNOWN IS THE ROLE OF CANCER RESEARCH IN IMPROVING ECONOMIC GROWTH" The economic value of cancer research to the UK is incredibly high. Why is it important that we know this, and what could it mean for the future of investment in cancer research… |

| DO WE FOCUS TOO MUCH ON GENOMICS? In our podcast with Professor Sara Zanivan we talk about how understanding the tumour microenvironment has developed over the past 20 years, how the techniques of proteomics have really freed researchers to ask the important questions and why we could even see mass-spec proteomics in the clinic.
Also – she poses a really interesting question about the balance between proteomics and genomics… are we overly focussed on the genome?
Also, keep your ears open for our next episode featuring Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz – coming soon! |
