It's Bob's birthday — so it only feels fitting that this is the day that we make this cool (free) update of CSS Grid Builder available to everyone. Yay!

We'll give you the highlights of this update in a bit, first let's talk about the concept of this app. For years we have been relying on (grid) frameworks like Bootstrap and Foundation. Both recently added a flex-grid to their code base, which we believe to be the wrong approach — flexbox was not made to serve as a page layout system.

Don't get us wrong here — front-end frameworks are still useful, but not for layout. Which is exactly how CSS Grid Builder works: use all the other goodness of the framework of choice, like helpful The Toggle in Foundation, while managing layout with the visual CSS Grid Editor.

With all the code bloat for managing rows and columns* removed, the design is easier to maintain, more modular and future proof — reusing (code) components or switching to a different (front-end) system is way easier. And you can create production proof layouts today, with the help of Feature Queries.

Last week Bob showed how Feature Queries could be used to create fallback layouts for browsers that do not support CSS Grid. They work wonders, but the entire workflow is a bit tedious. That's why we plan to add them to CSS Grid Builder!

It is a whole list really... We tweaked performance, updated the un/redo system, added position: sticky to the positioning controls, updated controls to support the perspective property, and much much more...

Personally, we are a big fan of the whole new Custom State workflow. This allows you to target elements in a specific state, like the :nth-child() or dynamic classes triggered by Javascripts. This is oh so sweet!
