Because you have eyes and a brain and, of course, taste, you do not need me to tell you that Taylor Russell looked amazing this year. Nor do you need me to point out how Julianne Moore and Margot Robbie killed it in new Bottega or that Zendaya won every red carpet she set foot on. What you do not need, in short, is another Best Dressed list.

Instead, as we bid adieu to the madness that was 2022, let’s revisit the most memorable looks and pieces of the year, the talking point ‘fits – some good, some bad, some unfortunately ugly – that cut through the noise of the permacrisis.

The writing was on the wall for 2022 when we saw Jeff Bezos ringing it in in his too-tight Casablanca shirt. Bad PR for the men of midlife…

… Good PR for them however when the newly experimental Brad Pitt stepped out in a skirt.

And for old dudes, courtesy of David Hockney in yellow Crocs.

Not that you needed decades to look great. See Prince Louis in his sailor outfit. An icon has arrived.

Meanwhile, small screen stars vied for official fashion royalty status. See Kim Kardashian in her kontroversial Marilyn Monroe dress at the Met.

Or Christine Quinn’s turn on the couture catwalks of Paris.

On screen too, some very stylish moments. Hello, Sienna Miller’s quietly luxurious Anatomy of a Scandal wardrobe.

Hello kids of Euphoria.

Hello Carmy’s white T-shirt in The Bear.

It was all about Rihanna, owner of the best dressed bump ever. Her pregnancy announcement – and her entire maternity wardrobe – was a game-changer.

And a moment please for Florence Pugh’s sheer Valentino, and the attitude she wore with it.

Bras could still make front pages too, as Chloe Kelly showed.

Just when you thought it was all over, Katie Holmes brought back the ‘dress*-and-jeans’ combo. *it was actually a top.

Think that’s bad? Remember when Liz Truss wore the same dress as a fictional fascist?

Other politicians had a better year. Like US senator John Fetterman in his hoodie.

Also a fan? Emanuel Macron! Who was widely considered to be fan-boying…

… Volodymyr Zelensky. The Ukrainian president swapped his khaki tees for an ‘I’m Ukrainian’ hoodie for his appearance on David Letterman’s ‘My Next Guest Needs No Introduction’ earlier this month.

Slava Ukraini!
