"Should I Get My Valuable Vintage Treasures (Posters) Linen Backed?

What are investors and collectors REALLY putting their money on?

One question I am asked all the time is, should get my old poster linen backed?

And there’s not one answer. For example, prior to 1970 most poster paper was Not acid free so the acidic poster paper turns yellow and becomes brittle. In addition, having a vintage poster laid down on a flexible linen backing removes all the folds, wrinkles and creases, and also makes it possible to repair damage and age related deterioration. The result is a vintage poster that now displays with an amazing look and feel. Namely, a spectacular piece of Art!

That said, some collectors do not like any restoration at all to their vintage treasures and want the Unrestored authenticity of a poster that looks like it was just taken off the wall of a movie theater or a Woolworth’s picture window 70-80 years ago. My personal preference lies in the middle. I do love many of my posters linen backed but I also find most appealing the wear and tear that is part of the piece’s natural vintage beauty.

For example, the old remnants of a poster like vintage tape stains on the edges, or some vintage sepia toning I find an intricate part of its beauty. I have three original “JAWS” posters. Two I have linen backed and they look Amazing. But a third “JAWS” Poster I acquired has just the right touch of vintage wear that adds a valuable layer of authenticity and aesthetic beauty. .

 Yes, I love oxidized 50-90 year old tape stains!.
