PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT Independent factual production company Barcroft Studios is making some changes. The reorg sees parent company Barcroft Holdings renamed Barcroft Studios and Barcroft Media (editorial content and distribution), Barcroft Productions (linear and digital TV production) and Barcroft Plus (branded content) gradually phased out. The company’s team will now all work under the Barcroft Studios corporate brand, organized under production, development, commercial and operations divisions. Freeform signed a script-to-series deal for half-hour dramedy Party Girls, inspired by the true story of the daughter of the first female leader of the Black Panther Party. Series comes from Platform One Media and will be executive-produced by Elisa Ellis (Narcos), Fishburne and Helen Sugland of Cinema Gypsy Productions (grown-ish) and Lance Krall and Peter Siaggas of Picture It Productions, with Dayna Lynne North (Insecure) set to write the pilot script and serve as executive producer/showrunner, should it go to series. Isa Dick Hackett and her Electric Shepherd Productions (Man in the High Castle) inked a first-look deal with Amazon. “I am truly inspired by Jennifer Salke’s bold vision for Amazon Studios and I’m thrilled to be partnering with her stellar creative team,” said Hackett. President Trump will give his State of the Union speech on February 5. Do you think it will be conciliatory or combative? Let us know in the Cynopsis poll: www.cynopsis.com/poll/. (In our last poll, we asked which former White House staffer should be on reality TV. Sean Spicer was the big winner, with 41% of the vote, followed by Hope Hicks with 24%, Steve Bannon and Nikki Haley with 15%, and Jeff Sessions with just 6%.) Dorsey Pictures takes a deeper dive into true-crime series by signing true-crime producer Kelly McLear and true-crime author Randy Williams to first-look deals. “As we bring our unique view into the world of crime, we want to align with longtime experts in the field that have a pulse on the most compelling stories and characters,” says Chris Dorsey, founding partner of Dorsey Pictures. “Kelly and Randy have unique skillsets and decades of experience, along with tremendous trust in their field.” A Black Lady Sketch Show landed a series order from HBO. Half-hour comedy created by, starring and exec-produced by Robin Thede (The Rundown with Robin Thede) and exec-produced by Issa Rae (Insecure) will feature narrative sketches performed by black women and celebrity guests. ABC ordered two pilots based on Israeli formats. Until the Wedding tells the story of how a couple’s decision to get married affects everyone in their lives, while The Baker and the Beauty follows the unlikely romance between a blue-collar baker and an international superstar. Drama pilot Dare Me was picked up to series by USA Network with Netflix onboard in a co-producing deal that gives the streamer first-run rights outside the U.S. Series from Universal Cable Productions in association with Film 44 is based on the novel by Megan Abbott about teen angst, jealousy and loyalty in a small Midwestern town. COMING UP Double Dare at Super Bowl premieres Super Bowl Sunday, February 3, at 12p. Competition special will be simulcast across Nickelodeon, Nicktoons and TeenNick. DIGITAL DATA Auto network MAVTV Motorsports Network chose independent data analytics company 605 to deliver comprehensive ratings and a portfolio of advanced measurement and analytics solutions. What drove the deal? “605’s advanced analytics solutions and TV viewership data from more than 12 million household set-top boxes provides MAVTV with much more accurate data to share with our advertisers and is deeper and more useful than any other data company could provide,” Brock Thompson, SVP of Media Sales, MAVTV, tells Cynopsis. Broadband-only households are set to grow from 23.3 million in 2018 to 40.8 million by 2023, according to estimates from Kagan. The steep upward trend of cord-cutting is not surprising given the abundance of online video services on the market, said Tony Lenoir, Senior Kagan Research Analyst at S&P Global Market Intelligence, “although this could be a circular argument, with more companies jumping on the streaming video bandwagon in response to the growing broadband-only market.” Kagan, a media research group within S&P, expects the segment of broadband homes without a traditional multichannel subscription to account for nearly one-third of U.S. households in the next five years. Ultrahaptics, creator of tactile sensations in mid-air, is the latest company to join digital out-of-home org DPAA. “The haptics market is going to be enormous, projected to be a $19 billion business by 2025,” said Barry Frey, DPAA President and CEO. (The term “haptics” refers to the use of technology that stimulates the sense of touch and sensation of motion, especially to reproduce in remote operation or computer simulation the sensations that would be felt by a user interacting directly with physical objects.) Facebook released a draft charter to establish an oversight board that would determine whether content on Facebook meets community standards and reflects the company’s values. Board members would be experts on content, privacy, journalism, safety and other relevant areas. Streaming news net Cheddar is launching “Cheddar Nights” on Monday, February 4, a programing block of acquired entertainment shows anchored by Comedy Central’s Nathan for You, plus mobile game show Out of Tune. The block will be monetized through dynamic ad insertion. Roku added access to Showtime, Starz and Epix via the Roku Channel on iOS, with Android devices slated for access in mid-February. Gusto TV will launch on STIRR, Sinclair Broadcast Group’s ad-supported streaming service. It will be the service’s first food channel. ADVERTISING Volvo is offering Super Bowl viewers a chance to win a new car by taking a digital test drive instead of watching commercials. Three people who keep their eyes on the car the longest in its mobile app will win in an activation that comes courtesy of Grey New York. A tidbit courtesy of advertising technology company Viant on the brand preferences of Super Bowl watchers versus non-watchers: Super Bowl watchers are six times more likely to watch the Academy Awards, while non-watchers are 4.58 times more likely to watch the Emmys. GOING GLOBAL Quintus Media signed a raft of deals for its high-end factual documentaries produced by Maximus Film and WeltN24 GmbH. In one of the deals, Swiss broadcaster SRF picked up such titles as The Rise of Drones, The Digital Globe and Wales in Danger. Entertainment One aims to reach a global audience with Chinese New Year “Year of the Pig” celebrations with two new episodes of Peppa Pig. The specials begin airing on Tuesday, February 5, in the UK. Select markets will air the specials in Mandarin. CASTING Richard Armitage (Berlin Station) will star in Netflix thriller The Stranger…Taissa Farmiga (The Mule), Rhea Seehorn (Better Call Saul), Luke Kirby (The Deuce) and Ike Barinholtz (The Oath) landed roles in an upcoming episode of CBS All Access’ The Twilight Zone. |
